Place-making: A Phenomenological Theory of Technology Appropriation
نویسندگان
چکیده
We study the introduction of new technology into (organizational) practices. We argue against the dualist under-pinning of typical IS technology appropriation literature and develop a phenomenological theory of appropriation based on Martin Heidegger’s analysis of equipment. On this view, technology moves from being an object inspected in the practice foreground to becoming equipment as a transparent means located in the practice background. We show that this transformation occurs through a practice of actively performed place-making in which the technology is accommodated in the practice among existing equipment, practical logics and social identities. We illustrate our theory with a rich case study of social media appropriation, making methodological use of the novel feature that self-referential conversations are captured within the technology, providing access to direct evidence of the appropriation phenomenon. The paper contributes a more nuanced sociomaterial account of the simultaneous transformation of technology and practices occurring in technology introduction.

Eliciting the Anatomy of Technology Appropriation Processes: a Case Study in Enterprise Social Media
The investigation of IT adoption and diffusion in organisations is a core topic of the IS discipline. However, orthodox theories take a mostly rationalist view that treats adoption as a decision situation. In this paper, we aim to show that it is necessary to appreciate the process nature of taking new technology into organisational contexts, and the open-ended nature of this process in terms o...
متن کاملHow Cultural Values Influence the Appropria-tion of Technology-Mediated Learning
Information technology (IT) is an important enabler of innovative learning scenarios. Today, numerous IT-enabled learning scenarios – often referred to as technology-mediated learning (TML) – such as massive open online courses, are applied worldwide across different cultures. However, little insights are available regarding the appropriation of TML and how culture influences the appropriation ...
متن کاملDeveloping a Model of Technology Appropriation: A Marxian Perspective
This paper explores the philosophical origins of appropriation of Information Systems (IS) using Marxian and other socio-cultural theory. It provides an in-depth examination of appropriation and its application in extant IS theory. We develop a three-tier model using Marx’s foundational concepts and from this generate four propositions that we test in an empirical example of IS in anesthesia. U...

With the availability of round-the-clock labor and inexpensive programming in India and other countries, software development projects increasingly take place in a virtual team setting. Adaptive structuration theory (AST) describes the process by which groups, such as virtual teams, use advanced information technologies. According to AST, people, technology and task structures interact, resulti...
